The purpose of this letter is to highlight our upcoming parent informational meetings. If your student is considering playing an instrument in 6th grade, we ask that you attend the following informational meeting. Our short, 30-minute meeting will cover the details of middle school band and orchestra.

To review, 6th grade students have three music options from which to choose: band, orchestra, or choir. Students are required to select one of these options. Below is information regarding what happens next for each music class.

*Beginning Choir*
If your son or daughter is interested in choir, there is no need to participate in instrument selection. You do not have to do anything at this time. Your student will automatically be registered for choir if you do not participate in the band or orchestra instrument selection process.
*Beginning Band / Orchestra*
Wayzata Public Schools starts beginning band and orchestra instruction on the first day of school in the 6th grade as a year-long course. If your child would like to participate in band or orchestra, you must sign up for an instrument selection time. At this appointment music teachers will meet you and your student to find the best fit. To sign up for an instrument selection time, please visit the SignUpGenius links listed below for band or orchestra.

If you do not have Internet access, and you would like to schedule a Band interview time, please call the beginning band voice mailbox at 763-745-6456. If you do not have Internet access, and you would like to schedule an Orchestra interview time, please call the beginning orchestra voice mailbox at 763-745-6584.
**We highly encourage students to narrow their interest to Band OR Orchestra before their instrument selection appointment. ** However, if your child is undecided between band and orchestra, you will need to sign up for two separate instrument selection appointments. Orchestra teachers will only hold orchestra interviews, while band teachers will only hold band interviews. Students interested in playing a band or orchestra instrument must begin in the fall of 6th grade. There is no beginning band or orchestra class in 7th or 8th grade.
