6th Grade Band students learn the basics of playing an instrument, music reading, counting rhythms, and they will play small and large ensemble music. Students practice at home and perform in two concerts per year. This is a beginning band experience.

In the middle grades, the "lead discipline" approach continues, but with added emphasis on interdisciplinary connections (as the word "Studies" in the title "Minnesota Studies" suggests). Grade six features history as the lead discipline but the focus includes geographic, economic and civic understandings. Students study Minnesota history and its government, placing the state and its people within the context of the national story. They engage in historical inquiry and study events, issues and individuals significant to Minnesota history, beginning with the early indigenous people of the upper Mississippi River region to the present day. They examine the relationship between levels of government and how the concept of sovereignty affects the exercise of treaty rights. They analyze how the state’s physical features and location of resources affected settlement patterns and the growth of cities. Drawing on their knowledge of economics, students analyze the influence of a market-based economy at the local and national levels. They learn about the unique role Minnesota played and continues to play, in regional, national and global politics.

The Forensic Science curriculum is designed to build upon science concepts and to apply science to the investigation of crime scenes. This course will focus on making behavioral changes that directly impact students' lives. Stress management, happiness, self-esteem, empathy, friendship, love, showing gratitude, acts of kindness, and personal connections with others are all behaviors in research that impact our overall happiness. The Science of Happiness course is where students will learn about and practice a specific topic or skill that's important to a happy life, each theme being backed by research.

Students will rely on their 6th and 7th grade Spanish skills to develop their language skills further. Students will expand their existing vocabulary by learning various new topics. They will learn all present tense verb forms and continue to learn proper sentence structure. A variety of activities will be used to promote listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Significant cultural events will be celebrated. This Spanish course is equivalent to Spanish 1 at Wayzata High School. Students who successfully complete this Level 1 Spanish course will be eligible to take Level 2 Spanish in 9th grade.
8th Grade World Language Elective

Intro to Strength Training is designed for the students to have the opportunity to participate in an introductory strength training course where you learn and practice basic lifts and progressions, key weight training terminology, 12 muscles of the body, safety protocol, and proper weight room etiquette. Students will learn how to create a personalized workout program according to their sport or wellness interest, and complete that workout program.

Learn by doing in this hands-on minds-on woodworking class. Project choices cover every skill and confidence level. Looking for something fun and not too intimidating? Make a decorative sign, mini cornhole board set, or shelf. Ready for something more complex, make a keepsake box, table, and more exciting options! The ultimate challenge is to design your project within certain constraints before making it. If retaking this class, different opportunities will be available.

Students will learn about art processes from around the world. Students will use weaving, clay, found objects, painting, and more, to interpret their learning into personal projects. For example:
- Weaving/fiber/textiles from Native Americans and Japan.
- Clay sculpture from China, Aztec, and Mayan cultures.
- How shape and pattern is used in Mexico, Aboriginal art, Ojibwe and Dakota tribes to create paintings, sculptures, architecture and more.
