Policy 614 - Credit for Online Learning

The purpose of this policy is to recognize and govern online learning options of students enrolled in the school district for purposes of compulsory attendance and to address enrollment of students with an online learning provider for supplemental or full-time online learning.

A. The School Board recognizes the ever increasing opportunities for online learning available to students and it is the responsibility of the School Board and district educators to endorse learning options and courses which represent quality teaching and learning in accordance with Minnesota statute. These online courses are available to support excellence in education and provide students with learning alternatives. To meet the challenge of ensuring that online courses are of the highest quality, the School Board directs the Superintendent of Schools to develop and maintain criteria and/or establish processes that assure high standards of excellence and integrity.

B. The school district shall not prohibit an enrolled student from applying to enroll in online learning.

C. The school district shall grant academic credit for completing the requirements of an online learning course or program.

D. The school district shall allow an online learning student to have the same access to the computer hardware and education software available in the school district as all other students in the school district. An online learning provider must assist an online learning student whose family qualifies for education tax credit to acquire computer hardware and educational software for online learning purposes.

E. The school district shall continue to provide non-academic services to online learning students.

F. Online learning students may participate in the extracurricular activities of the school district on the same basis as other enrolled students.
