Policy 522-R Do Not Attempt to Resuscitate Do Not Intubate Orders Regulations
I. Procedures
The purpose of these regulations is to provide guidance to School District staff when parents request the District to honor and/or convey doctor's orders for DNR-DNI. If the District receives a request from a family and their physician to honor "Do Not Attempt to Resuscitate" or "Do Not Intubate" orders, the following procedures will be followed:
A. The School District employee who first becomes aware of the request shall immediately inform a District school nurse and the Director of Special Services.
B. A school nurse or the Director of Special Services shall contact the family and inform them of the District policy and will outline the following procedures:
If a student is undergoing a medical emergency during school or school activities, the following will occur:
1. School District staff will provide reasonable emergency care and assistance when a student is undergoing a medical emergency during school or school activities.
2. School District staff will activate emergency medical services (911) as soon as possible when a student is undergoing a medical emergency during school or school activities.
3. The student's parents/guardians and living arrangement (if different from the parents) will be contacted immediately and informed of: the nature of the emergency, the location of the student, and that the District will perform emergency care procedures until the 911 response team arrives.
4. The parents and/or their physician have the responsibility to convey a DNR-DNI Order to the appropriate medical personnel if they wish.
In the event an individualized emergency care plan is in place, created by a student's IEP or Section 504 team in accordance with state and federal law, the District may convey those orders to the 911 response team.
