Policy 222 - Board Vacancies

I. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to clarify the process for filling an open spot on the School Board should a temporary or permanent vacancy occur.

II. General Statement of Policy

A vacancy on the Board occurs when a member dies, resigns, ceases to be a resident of the district, or is unable to serve on such Board and attend its meetings for not less than 90 days because of illness or prolonged absence from the district. In the event of vacancies, the Board member’s position shall be filled in accordance with Minnesota Statute.

III. Temporary and Permanent Vacancies

A. A temporary vacancy caused by a member being unable to serve on the Board and attend its meetings for not less than 90 days because of illness or prolonged absence from the district, may, after the Board has by resolution declared such vacancy to exist, be filled by the Board at any time, or until such ill or absent member is again able to resume the duties as a member of the Board; whichever date is earlier. When such ill or absent member is again able to resume the duties as a member of the Board, the Board shall by resolution so determine and declare such person to be again a member of the Board, and the member appointed by the Board in their absence to be no longer a member thereof.

B. Any other vacancy on the Board shall be filled either by special election or appointment as specified by state law.
