Cadet Sarah Cao, a 2021 graduate of Wayzata High School, has been named one of 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars, the only one from Minnesota.
Cao, a senior at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, is double majoring in international affairs and Chinese with a minor in terrorism studies.
“I’m excited to deepen my understanding of international relations while connecting with leaders who share a commitment to tackling global challenges,” Cao said when asked what she is looking forward to doing as a Rhodes Scholar. “It’s a rare chance to learn, contribute and grow in a way that directly impacts my future work.”
The Rhodes Scholarship is a prestigious postgraduate award that enables outstanding students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. Cao plans to pursue a master’s in global governance and diplomacy and a master’s in contemporary Chinese studies.
“This is an opportunity to [focus] on the challenges shaping our world while working alongside an incredible community of scholars,” Cao said. “I am very grateful for the mentors, teammates and communities who supported me along the way.”
Cao credits Wayzata High School for providing a strong foundation.
“WHS teachers always challenged me to think critically, work hard, and approach problems from different angles,” Cao said. “From my time on the swim and dive team to student council, each experience was a new opportunity to develop leadership and work through challenges. These lessons have been invaluable, guiding me from Wayzata to West Point and beyond.”
Scott Gengler, principal of WHS, said the school strives to prepare students for future opportunities by fostering skills like intellectual curiosity, perseverance, empathy and a commitment to making a difference.
“Anytime someone is honored with achievements such as this, it fills our entire school community with immense pride,” Gengler said. “Their success reflects the collective efforts of our dedicated staff, supportive community and the student’s own drive and determination.”
In addition to the Rhodes Scholarship, Cao is also a Stamps Scholar, a Winant Scholar and a Stokes Writing Fellow.
She encourages current students to pursue opportunities beyond their comfort zone and to focus on growth rather than achievements.
“Accomplishing it feels like the result of years of preparation and a reminder of the importance of staying open to unexpected opportunities,” Cao said.
After completing her studies at Oxford, Cao plans to return to rejoin her West Point classmates serving in the U.S. Military.
