School Tax Process

We explain how school property taxes are set and collected.

How your school taxes are set

  1. The State sets limits: State law restricts how much school districts can tax. The Minnesota Department of Education calculates these limits.
  2. The district holds a hearing: Your local school district hosts a public "Truth in Taxation" meeting. They then approve the final tax amount and send it to the county.
  3. The county collects and pays: The county sends out your tax statement, collects your payment, and delivers the funds to the school district.
