Attendance Area Adjustments

Process Underway to Adjust District Attendance Areas

We want to inform you that a process to adjust school attendance areas/boundaries within the Wayzata Public School District is now underway. This effort aims to better balance student enrollment across our elementary and middle schools. To facilitate this important process, the district has partnered with TeamWorks International.

What are attendance areas?

Attendance areas, or boundaries, define the regions within the Wayzata Public School District assigned to specific elementary or middle schools. Adjusting these boundaries may result in some students attending a different school in the 2025-26 school year. However, this process will not alter the boundaries between different school districts.

Why are these changes necessary?

  • Some of our schools are currently experiencing overcrowding due to increasing student enrollment and a growing demand for specialized services. Meanwhile, other schools have available capacity.
  • We need to address these capacity challenges to ensure all students have an optimal learning environment.
  • We are dedicated to being fiscally responsible and ensuring that every district building is used as efficiently and effectively as possible for the benefit of our community.

What to Expect Next

We will be sharing more information and highlighting opportunities for your input throughout the process. Your voice is important as we work together to develop a solution that serves our entire school community.

Key Dates

  • Summer 2024: The planning phase of the attendance area adjustment process began with the Wayzata School Board’s approval of the Guiding Change Document at its July 8, 2024 meeting. This document outlines the goals and parameters for the attendance area adjustments.
  • Late Summer 2024 - Fall 2024: The design phase is in progress, with a team of staff working alongside TeamWorks International to create possible attendance area adjustment concepts. An Input Team, including parents/caregivers and staff from each school, will provide feedback on these concepts. All members of the school community will also have the opportunity to provide online input.
  • December 2024 - Spring 2025: The Wayzata School Board is expected to approve the final K-8 attendance area adjustment model in December. Following this, we will share detailed information about the implementation plan and offer support to families affected by the changes, including welcome events at the new schools.
  • September 2025: The new attendance areas will take effect.

Please note, the revised attendance areas are intended to remain in place for 3 to 5 years, depending on the pace of student enrollment growth. Additionally, the district is in the process of evaluating future facility needs to determine whether new schools may be required to accommodate this growth.

We appreciate your engagement and understanding as we work through this process. Your input is invaluable as we strive to provide the best possible educational environment for all our students.
