Can my student with special needs or circumstances attend?
Wayzata Kids is an inclusive program. All staff work with all children. Each child brings their own uniqueness to the program.
Wayzata Kids before and after school program is a group child care program. We work diligently to train and prepare staff to work with all children in an inclusive environment. Programs outside of the school days are not included in a student’s IEP, but we do use the information in the IEP, as well as information from the family, to aid in creating appropriate accommodations for each student. Any accommodations put in place will be reviewed and modified as needed to best meet the needs of the student in the social and recreation setting of Wayzata Kids The staff are not special education staff and the childcare program is not part of a student’s IEP. We value parent input as part of that process, but need to ensure the accommodations work within the parameters of our out-of-school-time childcare program.
If your child has special needs, please contact the Inclusion Specialist at 763-745-5206, so we can work closely with you to best serve your child’s needs. The program reserves the right to have appropriate staffing in place to accommodate children who cannot be supported in ratios.
What happens if my child has ongoing behavioral concerns in Wayzata Kids?
Wayzata Kids will work to help each child be successful within the program, but we realize our program may not be the right experience for everyone. If it is determined our interventions to redirect repeated negative and/unsafe behaviors (aggression towards self/others/property and/or elopement) have been unsuccessful, the student may be disenrolled from the Wayzata Kids program.
What can you expect from Wayzata Kids staff?
- Staff will reach out to you to gather information about your child in order to best collaborate on how Wayzata Kids can best support you and your child.
- Staff will do their best to implement positive behavior interventions in order to help students with behavior.
- Note: Wayzata Kids staff are childcare staff and are not necessarily trained in Special Education.
- If an incident occurs, Wayzata Kids staff will reach out to you via incident report, phone call, or a meeting.
- The Wayzata Kids Inclusion Specialist and the Site Manager will collaborate with you to put together a plan to help the student be successful.
- If incidents continue to occur, the Inclusion Specialist will work with Site Manager to adjust the student plan based on feedback from staff and family.
- Staff coaching and mentoring will be provided by the Inclusion Specialist so staff feel comfortable executing the plan.
