Adding WHS Student Support Team 2019-2020

Dear Wayzata High School Community,

I hope you are enjoying winter break. As we prepare to start the new year at WHS, I am excited to let you know we will be adding a fourth student support "Alpha Team" beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.

In 2015-2016, we moved to student support teams assigned by alphabet to provide a more aligned, consistent and tighter support network for our students, who stay with their teams for all four years of high school. Each alpha team consists of an associate principal, dean of students, social worker and three guidance counselors. These student support teams have had a positive impact by providing more consistent and aligned services, stronger school-to-home communication and greater facilitation of support services for our school community.

As our student enrollment grows, we want to continue to provide this deeper level of support and service for our students and their families. To minimize the impact that hiring new staff will have on the alpha team assignments, we have decided to add a new fourth team in its entirety at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year; this new team will include an associate principal, dean of students, social worker and three guidance counselors. As a result, we will be able to immediately reduce the ratios for all our student support alpha teams, allowing families a more personalized experience at WHS.

As we restructure these alpha teams, your student(s) may be assigned a new associate principal, dean of students, guidance counselor and/or social worker for next year as a result of adding a fourth team; we will do everything we can to minimize the changes of our current guidance counselor assignments. Regardless of these changes, each alpha team will still have access to additional staff and services that provide the crucial supports our students may need in the areas of academic, chemical, emotional, mental, physical and social health.

All of our families will be hearing from their respective teams this spring with more detailed information.

Your thoughts and feedback are always welcome! Please do not hesitate to call if you have a question or concern.

Sincerely,
