Wayzata High School

Dear Wayzata High School Community,

As we head into spring break, I am reaching out to share a few thoughts about the general health and well-being of our students and an update about the senior awards banquet, prom, graduation, and the senior party.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our students have plans in the coming days to vacation out of town, while others will be staying home for spring break. While spring break can provide welcome relief from busy schedules, it can also position vacationers, particularly adolescents, into some potentially harmful circumstances. Further, for those not traveling, increased idle and unsupervised time at home during spring break can also create circumstances that can be concerning. The past 12 months have only amplified these concerns. We want to be sure that our students enjoy their time away from school, while at the same time exercising their best possible judgment. It is a good time for family reminders about expectations while traveling and when at home, so we all can come back on April 12 healthy and ready to finish the year.

Senior Awards

The 2021 Senior Awards will be held at WHS on Monday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m.  Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we will only have seating for students receiving an award.  The program will be streamed live for parents & families to enjoy.  Invitations to our awardees will be sent out after spring break.

Prom

A formal senior prom will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Minneapolis Event Center. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, prom will be open to WHS senior students only. If space allows, we will offer additional tickets to WHS juniors or sophomores as a guest of an attending senior. No outside guests will be permitted to attend. Any student choosing to attend prom must be responsible for maintaining safe distancing and COVID-19 safety protocols. Further information and details will be communicated to senior families in early April.

Graduation

Graduation will be held at Mariucci Arena on Friday, June 4. Due to the current Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) COVID-19 restrictions, we will need to host two separate ceremonies. The first ceremony will be at 5:00 p.m. for students with the last names A-LAQ (1st and 2nd-floor alpha teams).  The second ceremony will be at 8:00 p.m. for students with the last names LAR-Z (3rd and 4th-floor alpha teams).  Each ceremony will last approximately 1.5 hours. To meet the capacity restrictions at Mariucci Arena, each graduate will receive a limited number of tickets for their guests to attend in assigned seats. The ceremony will also be streamed live. Students who are unable to attend will be offered an opportunity to receive their diploma at a designated date and time this summer here at Wayzata High School. Further information and details will be communicated to senior families in the coming weeks.

Senior Party

The Rock the Block Senior Party will be held on Saturday, June 5 from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. There will be fair food, games, a hypnotist, and more. The Senior Party will take place at WHS in the bus loop. Ticket information will be emailed to senior families directly from the Senior Party Committee.  Please email the senior party committee at Wayzata.seniorparty@gmail.com with the subject "keep me informed" to receive updates about the senior party. You can also visit the Senior Party website.

In Closing

It is important to remember that prom and graduation are within three weeks of each other and all events are pending the state COVID-19 health and safety protocols and guidelines at that time. As such, it becomes incredibly important that our students are making responsible decisions. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, pending test results or currently a close contact in a school-required quarantine will not be able to attend any of these activities. Please do your best to support good decision-making so we can all experience these milestone events together.

I wish you all a safe, restful and rejuvenating spring break!

Scott Gengler

Principal
