Dear Wayzata High School Students,
I am writing to you this morning in light of the unfortunate and tragic events that unfolded in Washington, D.C. yesterday afternoon and early evening. As you now know, January 6, 2021 was the designated day that legislators in Congress were expected to certify the Electoral College votes for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election.
What started out as a protest of the election results turned into a violent and unlawful situation. This wasn't a good day for our country. Some of the behaviors and actions observed on television were very difficult to understand and even harder to believe, resulting in tragic and unnecessary loss of life.
Understandably, you may be feeling unsettled by the events that occurred. I want to assure you that staff are here to listen and support you. In the coming days, I am sure opportunities will be offered for you to process what has happened. I encourage you to do this in a safe and respectful manner. If you need additional support, I encourage you to reach out to a member of your student support team.
In closing, you are observing that democracy can be very messy at times, but I am confident that over the next days we will witness firsthand the strength of our constitution and the established democratic rules of order designed to protect that constitution. I encourage you to remain kind and supportive of each other as we continue to navigate what has been an incredibly challenging school year.
Respectfully, Scott Gengler Principal |
