Dates to Remember - Important Status/Updated Information As we continue to move through the challenges we are all dealing with, we will keep you updated regarding the status of the events still happening listed here:
As of April 6, the following events are still scheduled:
Reminders and Updates 2020 Freshman Respect Retreat Update Due to Governor Walz's Executive Order 20-19 to keep schools closed until at least April 30, WHS will, unfortunately, need to cancel the 2020 Respect Retreat, which was originally scheduled for April 22. WHS will begin processing refunds for the $10 Respect Retreat fee as soon as possible. If you paid prior to December 15, we will send a check in the mail to the address you have listed in Skyward. If you paid after December 15, families will be refunded through EPay. If you would like to donate your Respect Retreat fee to the 2021 Respect Retreat scholarship fund or if you have any questions about the Respect Retreat fee refund, please contact Jeannie Gosney, WHS purchasing secretary, at Jeannie.Gosney@wayzataschools.org or 763-745-6702. Thank you for your continued patience and support during this challenging time. Stay healthy!
PreACT and PreACT 8/9 Information WHS administered the PreACT and PreACT 8/9 on February 20, 2020. Student scores are now available in Skyward through Family Access. Individual student reports will be mailed to families soon.

Our WHS Counseling Department has developed grade-level seminars explaining the PreACT and PreACT 8/9 results. These presentations will be shared with students later this week via Canvas. The objectives of these seminars are to help students understand PreACT test results, know about available ACT prep options, and provide an opportunity to connect interests and skills to careers (through MCIS). We hope that you find the information useful and encourage you to contact your student's counselor if you have additional questions. After viewing the presentation, please encourage your student to complete the Seminar Feedback Survey.
Parents and students can get information about all the tests that we administer in the district at the WPS Research and Evaluation website.
Yearbook Update This year a total of 440 pages are being printed for this year's Wayako yearbook! The yearbook staff worked very hard before spring break to complete the main book. Thank you to those who helped by submitting photos and quotes. Currently, the yearbook staff is working on the supplement. The supplement will be like no other as they try to capture this unique learning and sports season. Don't forget to buy your copy to capture these memories that people will talk about for years to come! We have a limited number of books left to purchase. You can purchase a book through the WHS Yearbook website. We will keep you posted about how yearbooks will be distributed as soon as we get more information on the school format in May.
Media Center News - Hennepin County Library Services You can now apply for a Hennepin County Library e-card to get access to all of the great online resources our Hennepin County Libraries have to offer (eBooks, audio books, databases, etc.). Applications are quick and easy for those who do not have a current library card. Anyone who needs help with an existing library card can go to the Ask Us page. With a library card, students can access online tutoring from 1:00 - 11:00 p.m. Families who have used this tutoring in the past have found it very helpful. Parents, if you are struggling with juggling working from home, etc., you can also find "Homework Help" on the same website page. This might be a resource you may want to check out as another place your student can go to ask for help, on their own, to navigate their "new learning". For help learning how to check out a Hennepin County Library eBook using Overdrive, check out the tutorial on the Media Center eBooks page.
Virtual Calming Room Our WHS counseling team has developed an online Virtual Calming Room for students! Life can be overwhelming. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out how to work through difficult times. The Virtual Calming Room was designed to assist students in locating different strategies and tools for managing their emotions. We hope these tools will provide helpful outlets and practices for when life gets tough. The Virtual Calming Room can be accessed via student iPads or any web browser.
Keeping Your Family Healthy Week 1 of distance learning is now behind us. Below are links to information you may find helpful as we continue to navigate through the unexpected challenges we are all facing:
Social distancing with your teen may be a time to identify a potential substance use or mental health issue. We are all stuck at home. For anyone living or working with a teen, these times can be challenging. Teens may be short tempered or want to isolate from family members. For most people, including teens, this cabin fever is totally normal after an extended period of time home bound. But what if some of the attitudes or behaviors are a sign of a larger issue? This may be a good time for adults to discern if what they are seeing is a symptom of an underlying substance use or mental health issue. Some things to look for regarding a possible substance use issue in tens during this stay at home order include:
For additional resources and help when you suspect potential substance use, please reach out to Cindy Doth, our district's Chemical Health Supportive Services Specialist from Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Plymouth. She can be reached at 763-509-3953 or email at cdoth@ hazeldenbettyford.org
Recognize A WHS Staff Member Recognizing - Toni Leland, Biology Teacher Ms. Leland's style of teaching encourages her students to figure out how to do something, rather than simply tell them step-by-step directions and expect them to go through the motions. It is a real-life skill that students need to learn; specifically, problem-solving and persevering and working hard to figure out an answer. - Jamie Anderson Share the good things - Recognize a WHS Staff Member
