Message from Mr. Fredrickson Dear Families,
Today we met as a whole school for our January Assembly. We continue to reinforce how important it is to Remember to Be Kind and Keep It Nice Daily. We reviewed our themes from the first four months of the year. To remind you they were: September – Noticing Others October – Having Confidence (It is easier to be kind when you are feeling good about yourself.) November – Showing Kindness Creates More Kindness December – Including Others
This month our theme is "Showing Kindness When Something Isn't Right." At our assembly we read Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney, illustrated by Brian Pinkney. This book is about the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in on February 1, 1960. We tied December's theme of including others with the dark history of segregation. We shared the Martin Luther King, Jr. quote ,"We must meet violence with nonviolence" and paraphrased it to "We must meet unkindness with kindness" to be more Birchview friendly.
I will continue this theme when I go into classrooms later this month to read Super Manny Stands Up by Kelly DiPucchio, illustrated by Stephanie Graegin. This book gives students a concrete way on how to show kindness when something isn't right.
I hope your children are enjoying our books this year. I look forward to more deep classroom conversations.
Warmly, Mr. Fredrickson

Around the District Cold, Flu, and Lice… What Can You Do to Help? Head lice are a common problem for children in childcare settings and schools and anybody can get it. Most cases of head lice are acquired outside of school. Remember to check your child’s head after returning from a play date or sleepover – two common settings where head lice are spread. Regular observation by parents can also be an effective way to detect and quickly treat head lice. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Health or CDC websites as well as ways to treat head lice. When to keep your child home from school We've had so many great Ask Ali questions in our inbox – thanks to all who have submitted! Ali, along with her network of local experts, has been working hard to answer these questions. Responses are posted every Monday on her blog at partnersinpreventionmn.org/askali. Parents, you've got to check out the responses to these questions! There are some interesting ones that have been asked; chances are you might be wondering some of these things.
