Hybrid Courses

“Blended courses” and “hybrid courses” are the terms most likely to be used interchangeably, but hybrid courses differ in that their online components are intended to replace a portion of face-to-face class time. Online interactions can either be synchronous, meaning that students are interacting online in real-time, such as through class sessions conducted via Zoom or asynchronous, meaning that students interact online at different times, such as through online discussions, virtual meeting spaces, etc.

In addition to having many of the benefits of a blended course, the hybrid approach is ideal for students who are living in different locations or are part-time due to a busy schedule or a full-time job. Students do not have to travel to the face-to-face classroom as often and can complete coursework when and where it is most convenient for them. As opposed to a fully online course, however, maintaining the face-to-face component of the course can also help support students’ sense of class community, one of the biggest struggles an instructor faces in a fully online course.

If students are interested in participating in a hybrid course, they must select the course number that begins with a "H." For example, H194 = Hybrid Composition for College. As a reminder, the course selection process is used to collect data on the number of students interested in each course. At this point we are simply gauging student interest in consideration for offering hybrid courses. There is no guarantee that a course will be offered as hybrid for the 2022-2023 school year.

hybrid course guidelines

  1. Teachers will coordinate face to face (in-person instruction) interaction with students at least 20% of the scheduled days in a given term/semester.

    • 1 out of 5 days in a single week

    • No more than 3 times in a single week

  2. Teachers will provide an orientation to their hybrid course structure within the first week of instruction and prior to any flex days.

  3. Students will monitor the Canvas course calendar on a weekly basis.

  4. Teachers will take daily attendance.

  5. Students are expected to be off-campus during the asynchronous learning days unless they prefer to stay at WHS to report to an assigned flexible learning space.

  6. Students will report to a designated flexible learning space for "asynchronous" days.

  7. Instructors will be available in a classroom on asynchronous learning days.
