Dear Wayzata Families and Staff,
We are writing to provide an update regarding the shooting incident that occurred after the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony outside 3M Arena at Mariucci.
We are continuing to work closely with the University of Minnesota Police Department as the investigation continues. At this time, no additional details about the incident are available.
We can confirm that one of the two individuals injured in the shooting is a parent of a Wayzata High School graduate. With his permission, we are grateful to share that he has been released from the hospital and is currently recovering. The second victim has also been released, though no additional information has been made available at this time.
Understandably, a number of rumors have already begun to circulate. I want to strongly encourage our community to avoid speculation or the spread of unverified information, as this remains an active investigation. At this point, we have not been able to confirm any connection between the shooter or the second victim and our graduation ceremony.
Please know that several safety measures were in place before and during the ceremony, including operational metal detectors at all entrances, as well as the presence of school resource officers and University of Minnesota police and security personnel. Moving forward, we are committed to continually reviewing and strengthening our security protocols and exploring ways to prevent such incidents in the future, ultimately enhancing the graduation ceremony experience for all students and families.
Counseling and support services will be available at Wayzata High School next week for anyone who needs help processing what happened.
Through all of this, let’s not lose sight of celebrating this incredible milestone for our 934 graduates and their families, and recognizing the dedication of all of our staff who have supported them along the way.
Thank you for your compassion, resilience, and commitment to one another during this difficult time. Together, we will continue to support each other and emerge stronger as a community.
With appreciation,
Chace B. Anderson
Superintendent
