Homeless Students

A homeless individual lacks a fixed, adequate, and regular nighttime residence. This includes anyone who, due to a lack of housing:

• Lives in emergency or transitional shelters.
• Lives in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds.
• Lives in places not meant for habitation.
• Lives in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, or bus/train stations.
• Is doubled up with relatives or friends.

The district homeless liaison identifies children and youth in these situations.

The McKinney-Vento Act gives homeless and highly mobile students rights. These rights help them access educational opportunities and meet high academic standards in our district.

• Go to school, no matter where they live.
• Stay in their school of origin or enroll in a local school.
• Get transportation to their school of origin if it's in the child's best interest.
• Enroll in school immediately.
• Attend classes while the school transfers records and documents.
• Fully participate in school activities.
• Access the same programs and services as all other students.
