Section 504
Our district ensures equal access to learning for all students.
Overview
Our district works with families to make sure all students can fully take part in learning, programs and activities.
We follow the guidance in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a federal law that protects students who:
- Have a physical or mental condition that significantly limits a major life activity.
- Have a history of such a condition.
- Are treated as if they have such a condition.
After you request an evaluation
The 504 coordinator for your school will contact you to:
- Explain the evaluation process.
- Tell you about your parental rights and procedural safeguards.
- Get consent to do the evaluation.
- Share the results of the evaluation and discuss next steps.
Possible outcomes
All students who meet the Section 504 criteria are protected from discrimination. They may be eligible for:
- Informal support, known as accommodations.
- A formal 504 plan.
- An individualized health plan (IHP).
