Elementary School Reading Support

We give K-5 students targeted help and offer structured programs. We ensure every student builds a solid reading foundation.

Strategies

Elementary school literacy specialists use research-based strategies to:

  • Strengthen student reading skills.
  • Improve student performance.

Curriculum and instruction

Our intervention program is designed to meet the specific needs of our students.

Literacy specialists: 

  • Select from research-based curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Work to tailor the learning to be responsive to student needs.

Approaches include: 

  • Orton-Gillingham curriculum and techniques
  • SIPPS curriculum (Systematic Instruction in Phonics, Phonological Awareness and Sight Words)
  • Morphology curriculum
  • Repeated oral reading
  • Reciprocal teaching
  • Words Their Way sorts
  • Additional research-based instructional approaches based on student need

Collaboration

Literacy specialists work with instructional paraprofessionals and classroom teachers to:

  • Assess and monitor student progress.
  • Provide practice activities to help students hone their skills.
